Message from the President

2021-2022 President Kristen Sackley

Wow. I am so excited to be stepping into the role of President for the JLCU organization and doing it with plans to have most things IN-PERSON. I’m not sure about all of you, but it felt like the day we’d be back to meeting in person may never come.

Looking forward to the new Junior League year ahead, I am thrilled to work with each one of our members in creating a stronger, more powerful women’s leadership organization that has lasting effects on the Champaign-Urbana community. When I first found out about JLCU 8 years ago, I remember thinking how amazing all the opportunities sounded, but little did I know, it would be the launchpad for forming some of the most important relationships in my life, as well as teaching me the necessary skills to advance in my career, and overall making me feel like a more complete person. A person who actually COULD make a noticeable positive impact in her community.

We have a lot of members who are very “green” to JLCU at this point, having just completed their new member year, 1st or 2nd active year. But one thing these ladies are NOT “green” in is when it comes to your exceptional interdisciplinary skills, talents and leadership. The last 18 months or so, have been incredibly challenging for the world, and we’ve had to do things differently across all aspects of our life and JLCU. My hope is that looking forward, we can all take a big breath and keep moving forward and embracing the new challenges that come our way with the resilience we’ve all already shown.

Because, let’s face it: we have a lot of important work to do- and we absolutely cannot do it without our members. Our members are the foundation of what makes this organization successful and each and every one brings their unique skills to this organization and trust me: we need all the talents. So, if you are wondering where you REALLY fit in the JLCU puzzle or how you can make a difference, I challenge you to take the new year ahead and find out where you fit.

Ask questions. Speak up. Share your ideas. Network. Grow. Learn a new skill. Ask what JLCU can offer you. If you felt disconnected over the past year, it’s ok, we all did at some points, but one thing I know is I couldn’t have made it through without the camaraderie of my JLCU friends and the support the organization and network can really give you, if you let it and embrace it. Anyone who knows me, knows that I tend to be a little bit of an overachiever and I want to take on ALL THE THINGS, so please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying.  I am not saying that members should dedicate ALL of their free time to JLCU. What I am asking is that you take a moment and think about what JLCU and the larger AJLI organization can do FOR YOU and what can you give to JLCU. This organization starts with our dedicated members, and without them- we don’t have a JLCU.

Cheers to a great year ahead and looking forward to seeing many of you IN-PERSON!
